What to get your best friend for Best Friend Day

Whether it’s a friend from childcare, high school, down the road, mother’s group, your work wife, or a long-distance friendship, it’s safe to say best friends play an extremely important role in our lives.

They’ve provided shoulders to cry on, invaluable advice about fashion, been happy when we’re happy over boys, even madder when we’re upset, helped us cope with trauma, and shouted our triumphs from the rooftops.

But rarely do we celebrate their contributions to our life outside of birthdays – and perhaps if you have a good memory – certain dates of note.

You may or may not be surprised to learn there’s a specific day to celebrate your best mate;  it’s called Best Friend Day, and in this blog post we’re going to run through some unique gifts for that best friend in your life.

When is Best Friend Day – and what is it?

National Best Friends Day falls on June 8.

It is an annual celebration that actually has a long history; US Congress first devoted the day to best mates everywhere in 1935.

They had clearly tapped into what we all take for fact now; that best friends are good for our health and wellbeing.

In fact, it’s been shown 22 per cent of people who have a close network of friends live longer.

But that’s not all folks, a separate study by sociologist Claire Yang has shown people with close friendship ties also have lower blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference and levels of the inflammation marker C-reactive protein.

And in what is possibly our favourite statistic ever, a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology proved they literally make hills seem less steep.

We told you, best friends are invaluable. And we’re not just saying that because this author hates hills (with a passion).

Thankfully, the day has seen a modern-day resurgence since the dusty times of 1935. Mostly in 2007 along with the invention of social media, which has seen “Days” boom; think International Dog Day, Siblings Day, National Women’s Friendship Day, and so on.

Companies like Starbucks have run entire campaigns around Best Friends Day, hashtags have been dedicated to it, and gone viral, and photo after cute photo have been shared to ‘grams around the world.

But what are you supposed to do for it?

Well, it depends on what you and your mate enjoy but the goal is always the same and that is to make your best friend feel special.

This can come in the form of watching a movie together, doing a spa-day, or wining and dining.

But with all that said, the most common thing is to buy cute best friend gifts.

This is easier said than done of course, how do you encapsulate your friendship into a gift that truly says ‘you mean the world to me’?

It’s here we will let you in on our secret. We do this by allowing that person to treat themselves, and for that you can’t look beyond Pamper Packs.

They are full of nifty gifts designed especially for kicking back and taking that all important “me time” – what a gift indeed. We’re talking beauty items, wines, chocolates, handy tech accessories…basically all the good things in life.

For a truly personal touch, you can even make a pamper pack yourself. Just ask yourself, what does he/she like? From there the fun brainstorming begins.

When it comes to sizing, a small basket has around four to five items, a medium basket six to eight, and a large nine upwards.

For some inspiration, we’ve rounded up the following products:

You want to avoid any product with the following chemicals in them:

  • Parabens,
  • Synthetic perfumes, or the word ‘fragrance’,
  • SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate),
  • Formaldehyde,
  • Talc,
  • Phthalates,
  • Propylene glycol,
  • Triclosan,
  • Anything beginning with ‘petro’.

Why you ask?

It’s thought that as much as 60 per cent of what goes onto your skin goes into your body. We’re guessing you don’t want that to be chock-full of bad chemicals, especially when it comes to your best mate!

The chemicals above are not good for your health or the environment.
